This is a tutorial (I will probably edit a lot) on how to 3d print custom wargaming minis. I’ll assume you’re running Linux, but most of these tools are available for Windows as well.

There are three tools we need:
Cura or whatever slicer you prefer for your printer.

So, first up is MakeHuman. I’m doing this from an aged HP laptop, so forgive the crap quality of the renders. I always recommend playing around in the interface and figuring out applications by doing… So on the left in the default view are parameters for your human. Across the top are tabs with further parameters and geometries (clothing). But the crucial thing right now is the Export button at the top By default, it’s the 3rd button in and contains an orange up-arrow. Strike a pose and export your character.

From the export menu, shown here, you can select a number of formats. I have found Blender works well with wavefront .obj format. Now we’ll switch to Blender.

By default, Blender will load a cube in the work area. Delete it, then import the .obj file we created in MakeHuman.

The import menu-item shown here will let you choose the .obj we created. I named mine “rust_nudist” as the model has no hair or clothing geometries included.

From here, if we simply wanted to add a base, we can add a cylinder and position/scale it appropriately. Remember, Blender is a powerful 3d modelling tool, you can composite, sculpt, and more. I’m still learning the interface, and mostly use it to composite multiple 3d meshes together into a single .stl (stereolithography model)

Last step in Blender, be sure to select all objects and export as a .stl

Finally, we’re ready to slice the model and 3d print. The print settings shown are for my printer for a quick draft print. You will find that a lot of detail is lost, and you may need to adjust support settings depending upon the pose and compositing work you do.

Once you get a feel for each of the tools, now that you know a basic workflow, it’s easy to come up with custom miniatures once you start compositing other objects besides the base within Blender. Try it yourself, and make a custom 3d figurine with your choice of pose and accessories.
